Sunflower fields make a gorgeous location for pictures - especially senior pictures.  A field of sunflowers is quite a sight to behold. The tall flowers swaying gently in the breeze often serve as inspiration for poetry and art. Bright yellow petals stand out from their green leaves and blue skies. Sunflowers get their name because they are heliotropic. That means their flowers turn and follow the Sun as it crosses the sky. June is the time sunflowers come into full bloom and there is a stretch of highway in Northwest Louisiana filled with sunflowers.

The sunflower trail is a 20-mile drive through the outskirts of Shreveport, traveling through Dixie and Belcher into Gilliam, where the festival is held. It begins on Highway 3049 north between Shreveport and Gilliam and on the Sentell Road Loop, near Dixie Maze Farms. The flowers are in full bloom from mid-June through early July. Families can drive along the trail and take photos in the fields. Blooms generally last for about 3 weeks.   


Traditionally, the annual Sunflower Trail and Festival takes places every third Saturday of June in Gilliam, Louisiana from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is known to deliver a full afternoon of family-friendly fun, complete with food and crafts vendors, live music, and fields of vibrant sunflowers.
