First of all, if you are a senior, HUGE CONGRATS! This is such an awesome time in your life! Because you’re about to close one chapter and begin the next, NOW is the perfect time to document your life with a professional portrait session! Hopefully you have been considering hiring a professional photographer and we are here to help you know what exactly that looks like to ensure a portrait perfect session!
#1. THE ART: When comparing photographers, try to view their galleries as a whole instead of individual images in the beginning. Notice consistency above all else... are their images consistent and cohesive across the board? Or are some images fantastic while others aren’t so great? A consistent portfolio shows that the photographer has a signature style in the basics of their skill and can ensure a specific look across all clients. This is important to remember because you want to know that your session images will be the same quality as what you see in the photographers’ portfolio.
#2. THE EDIT: One main factor to consider is how the images have been edited. Notice the skin tone... do the seniors in the galleries have pores, freckles and natural skin tone? How about the lighting? Is the subject in the images bright and colorful? Or is there a moody feel with shadows? Does it look like a clean image or has it been treated with what looks like an Instagram filter? These aspects are important to observe because what you see in their portfolio will most likely be how your very own senior images appear. If you want to look like a model with perfect skin and high fashion editing, you’ll need to hire a photographer that can give you that. If you want more moody senior pictures with muted tones and a more free style, you’ll need to go with that photogra- pher. Please don’t expect a photographer whose gallery is filled with bright and happy colors to be able to provide you with a gallery of more moody work. All photographers have specific styles and signature looks that they specialize in to provide to clients who want that particular look.
#3. THE EXPERIENCE: Some photographers offer an entire experience from fashion consults, longer sessions and ordering sessions while others offer a quick session and digital images sent online. These are two very different senior photo processes that will allow you to choose which one is best for you. If fashion, makeup and hair aren’t that important to you, but time and digital images to share on social media are, then you will want to hire a photographer who can offer you that. If studio images with fashion lighting and professional airbrush makeup and hair styling is important to you, then you’ll want to hire a photographer who also specializes in fashion studio sessions.
